* From the Blog…Site Speed
——-
Site speed is one of Google’s many criteria used for ranking. Google wants to show people the most relevant results and they want results that are quick to load as well.Compression
—
Aside from initially designing your site optimally for speed, there are things you can do after it has been built which will significantly increase your site’s speed. The first way to do this would be to enable compression. This instructs the webserver to compress all text and eaily compressible data before it is served to your visitors. By making the content smaller to download, it gets served/viewed faster. We can enable this for you, or you can do so yourself by following the instructions from the first part of our blog post about making your site faster.http://www.lexiconn.com/blog/2012/09/make-your-site-faster-with-two-easy-steps/
The majority of the time it takes your site pages to load is due to your images. All images on your site should be compressed and optimized for web viewing. This should be done offline as opposed to uploading images that are too large in file size and shrinking them with html code. If you don’t have a local tool to do this sort of editing, you may wish to consider using an online resource such as http://www.smush.it
Image Caching
—
Image caching should also be set up, as that will inform the user’s browser to save a copy for a set period of time. This allows subsequent page requests to load much more quickly. The amount of time you set this for depends on how often you make changes, but generally a long period of time (e.g. one month) makes sense for images. Reference the second section of this blog post for more details.http://www.lexiconn.com/blog/2010/11/google-need-for-speed/
Content Delivery Network (CDN)
—
Another thing you can do to greatly improve your site’s speed is to make use of a Content Delivery Network (CDN). A CDN takes the images from your website, and distributes them across the globe to various locations. The CDN location closest to your website’s visitor then delivers the images/content to them, thereby providing them with a much quicker experience on your site. We can assist with setting a CDN up for your site. More details and a sign up from are located at:http://www.lexiconn.com/services/cdn.html
